Judo is a Japanese martial art and sport derived from ancient Samurai fighting systems.

The word Judo literally means "the gentle way". This refers to both, a grappling, non striking martial art but also the concept of "yielding" to an attack in order to counter with a technique which used the opponents momentum against them. 

​

In the late 1800's, Professor Jigoro Kano made steps to present Japanese fighting arts as a modern system of self defence, Police arrest and restraint, sports and education. 

Today, Judo is practiced worldwide and is a recognised Olympic Sport primarily focused on throws, takedowns, hold downs, chokes and strangles whilst upholding the ethos of sportsmanship and fair play.
